With approximately fifteen free months ahead, I got completely lost. Well maybe let's rewind first.
First week of May, I returned to Iceland for a week. NYC - Reykjavik tickets have been selling for merely 200+ usd via Wowair for a little while, and I had paid about 250 usd for a return trip the first week of May, when I had sprawled on that air mattress in Honolulu. How ludicrous it is to book for one more trip in the midst of a trip.
I'd dreamed of a massively lonely lunar road trip in Iceland, extreme isolation and a sense of otherworldliness. That didn't really come, and I'd learned only nearing my trip that the lunar landscapes are only accessible à partir de mid- or fin-juin, and more or less in July and in August when the crowds are in and the snow is out. So I had to be satisfied with what the country had to offer except the lunar central highlands. I really liked spending time in the Westfjords and the Eastern fjords. In the north there are quite a number of cities which have a slightly quaint medieval feel (but Icelandic cities other than the capital R have that sort of medieval whale-hunting sort of vibe anyway) which I wasn't very interested in anyway, and in the West and East people usually just pass through so you do get an experience of calm isolation. Driving the ring road through the north and the south there were too many cars.
I also discovered some nice hot pots that my host told me about. Apparently there's a very nice thermal pool about 45 mins past Djupavik (in Krossnes), and another hot pot that I liked was in Drangsnes. Has some spectacular views but me no towel and me too lonely.
Otherwise it was just really beautiful in general but I'd really hoped that I could go to places like Askja. Ice climbing was very fun and being on ice in general was fun. Last time I'd come we didn't get to go on ice for some reason although we were supposed to and as I did this time it was quite rewarding. The guides had recently discovered an ice cave (small one that led to a lake further deep, we didn't go so deep) that hadn't melted so we lowered ourselves into the cave and that was fun. A lot of melting action happening though
Ultimately the last day about 18 hours before returning my car I had an accident and hence the accidental babies.. It was such a marking experience but all is well now or I hope it will be soon.
Unfulfilled desires refer to plans unmade and days squandered while desires stay somewhat intact within. I have vague plans for this summer and the time forward, but nothing's really happened yet and with this somewhat long number of months I don't know where to start.
